BEC5 Some querries.

Thank you for your mail. Your questions, I shall try to answer them as best I can.

1. Yes you can treat only 2 or 3 spots at a time. But be careful with squamous cell carcinomas because they tend to be more aggressive than basal cell carcinomas and they can metastasize to other parts of the body.
2. You have to ensure that the cream does not get into the eyes so after applying the micropore perhaps you should put a gauze dressing over the top just so as to absorb any excess cream seeping out under the micropore.
3. Usually the area around the lesion is shaved just enough so the tape can stick.
4. Firstly, forget about Black Salve for Curaderm is known to be better than this product. You can buy some micropore that are the same colour as your skin so then they are not so visible.
5. If you tell me where you are located then perhaps I can find some people in your area that I have dealt with in the past.
6. I do not have any experience in dealing in other products but I am sure there are many on the internet.

Nose Lesion

called you about 2-3 weeks ago about the following: one lesion (BCC) that looks like a beetle on the side of my nostril next to its opening, 1/2 inch dia.; the other very near my ear canal, centered on the ridge (Crus of Helix) that ends closest to the canal, with a raw spot on the ridge, spread out and inflamed  (mottled in pinks) over a half inch around that spot. After thinking about Curaderm's use requirements, until I am certain as to the following, I want to hold off on ordering :   (1). My limited view of my ear, regardless, prevents certainty about applying just enough to just the site, and applying Micropore properly.    (2). Micropore so far grips long enough just inside my nostril, but sneezing or sniffles seems to loosen it. Comment?   (3). (a). I haven't figured out how to get Micropore to conform and stick to my nose w/o leaving what may be air  under it , or avoiding pushing Curaderm off the lesion in trying to keep air  out and the tape to stick.  Comment?   (b). may try to find something like  a honeycomb mesh to hold Curaderm between the lesion and tape  while achieving conformation and adhesion: a mesh with thin-walled cells.  Comment?    (4) (a). Inasmuch as exfoliation  has to occur, and the site has to be "clean", it would seem apt to soften the layer of dead cells and earlier Curaderm, if necessary, and then to rub that layer repeatedly until that layer comes off, i.e., in order for Curaderm to act directly on living tissue and especially if the process  as is fast as up to ten times a day. Comment?   (b). Is it the case that the long narrow tip of the Curaderm bottle is meant to squeeze Curaderm under the edges of a nearly exfoliating layer.

1. It is difficult for micropore to stick on wet surfaces so perhaps we should increase the number of times the dressings are changed per day ie. 3 to 4 times a day instead of just 1 or 2 times a day so that when the dressings come off we can then clean the lesion and apply a new one. This will also speed up the healing process.
2. In applying the dressing squeeze the tape from the middle outwards so that air bubbles are squeezed out and not trapped inside. In any case so long as the tape sticks we should not worry too much about air bubbles.
3. I agree with your idea of using a honeycomb mesh to hold the cream in place.
4. I think that we should leave dead skin or tissue alone if it is still firmly attached for it will come off eventually once the new tissue starts growing underneath it. Tagging dead tissue off also injures growing new tissue.
5. The narrow tip of the Curaderm bottle is just so that it is easy to apply the cream only on the lesion and not on normal healthy tissue.

Persistent pain Curaderm treatment

I have a BCC  which I have started treating with Curaderm but I am concerned about the pain which this is giving me which sometimes lasts for 24 hours or more. Is this normal for Curaderm  ?

Response:

Curaderm has some small local side effects and these include:

• some pain upon application but this should only last for a few minutes and is mostly due to the salicylic acid in the formulation.
• errythema  or redness around the edges of the lesion
• some stinging or burning sensation
• there may be some itching as well

The above are usually normal for Curaderm but a prolonged pain is not normal. The usual cause for this problem is that people tend to apply a relatively large amount of the cream onto the lesion such that when they then put the tape on it flattens the cream out and this then spreads onto the normal skin on the edges of the lesion. Those who are experiencing this problem will find that it is usually the edges that are most painful.

So the answer is to put less amount of cream on and to put it only in the middle of the lesion so that when the tape is applied the cream spreads evenly just to cover the lesion and not to go over onto normal skin. Another good thing about Curaderm too is that even if it is only applied in the middle of the lesion it will still trace and attack the cancer cells.

BCC - Nose

The two new lesions: one on the left side and the second one on the right side of my nose, which I described in my November 20 email with a photo attachment, got much bigger by expanding down on both sides of my nose. One of them even partially covered the tip of the nose. All that lasted until mid of January 2008. Since then the lesions have been getting smaller and finally, around mid February, there were only 4 small leftovers (appr. 2-3 mm in diameter): one on the left side, one on the right side and 2 on the tip of the nose (please see the attached photo). Please note all the new skin on my nose. However, what worries me is that in spite of the regular treatments (3 times a day) with Curaderm these last remaining small lesions don't want to close. Is there any explanation for this? Does the healing process seem somehow too long and atypical? Could the long healing time be perhaps attributed to weak potency of the Curaderm I've been u sing?< br>

You have been on treatment now for just over three months. Most single small lesions would have been healed by now but yours were relatively large so they will take longer to heal. The fact that the lesions have not closed over means that there are still some cancer cells around and there may still be a little discharge. I am sorry it is taking so long but I suggest that we continue with treatment for we do not want to leave cancer cells behind.

BCC - Lip

About a month ago Dr. Edward suggested I send over more pictures in a couple of weeks.

 HPIM0575 and HPIM0579 were taken October 31st after 5 weeks of treatment.

 HPIM0586 and HP0589 were taken November 14th after 7 weeks of treatment.

 Would you please have the Doctor look at the pictures to verify if the treatment is complete and if the treatment can be stopped.

 In yesterdays pictures, although the spot looks shiny, it is totally closed up and there is no weeping or discharge of any kind.  I am still puting on a small amount of the cream and the paper tape. It doesn't sting or burn UNTILL I put the tape on.

I have looked at the pictures you sent and the last one HPIMO589 looks
like the lesion is now healed. So you can now stop the Curaderm
treatment but I would suggest that you use some Tamanu oil which
should give you a smooth normal skin to complete your treatment.
